WebPentoxifylline (5.1.263) (Trental) is a xanthine derivative and acts as a hemorheological agent. It was approved (1984) for the treatment of intermittent claudication in patients with peripheral vascular disease. It also has antiinflammatory and antifibrotic properties. WebPentoxifylline is used to enhance healing in chronic ulcerative conditions such as dermatomyositis of collies and shelties and has been helpful in treating allergic reactions caused by physical contact with the allergen (i.e., contact allergic dermatitis). Ear margin vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation) can also be treated with pentoxifylline.
